TOPIC: THE LIFE OF CHRIST’S DISCIPLE (II)

READ: Matthew 11:28-30

[28] Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

[29] Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

[30] For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

MEMORISE:

Come to Me, all you who labor and heavy laden, and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28).

EXPOSITION

Discipleship is a process that leads to maturity, and ends in eternity. No matter your level in Christ, you must not outgrow the school of discipleship. Anyone, minister or member, who makes shipwreck of his/her faith has stopped learning from and focusing on Christ at some point (cf. Matt. 11:29; Heb. 12:2). No one falls in just a day; it is a gradual process-an accumulation of failures.

How does discipleship work? At a point, you enter as a disciple under a discipler. As you grow, you get to the point where you too become a discipler who keeps learning under the Holy Ghost, the great Discipler. The Holy Spirit must continue to teach you, so that your life and doctrine would not bring blemish to God’s name and discouragement to others around (cf. 1 Tim. 4:16). No true believer claims to have outgrown discipleship, because it is a life-long process growing to the full stature of Christ, our Master (Rom. 8:29; Eph. 4:13).

A true disciple is a learner. Therefore, no one, no matter the level in faith, or year in Christian service, can graduate from the school of discipleship while still here on earth. Learning, even discipleship continues throughout our lifetime. There are some who for independence have rushed out of the school of discipleship, only to make mess of their faith and lives.

In today’s devotional text, Jesus calls believers to learn of Him. Implication: Be available for discipleship, always. Follow Jesus. Bear the yoke of Jesus. His yoke is light, compared to the heavy burden the devil inflicts on fools, the ignorant and unsuspecting-those who reject Jesus. By implication, anyone who will not take Jesus’ yoke, follow Him, and become His disciple is a property of the devil, no matter the number of years in the church (cf. Jn. 8:44).

HYMN FOR TODAY:
CAC GHB 214

1. Come to the Saviour make no delay
Here in His word He has shown us the way;
Here in our midst He’s standing today
Tenderly saying, ‘Come”

Chorus:
Joyful, joyful, will the meeting be
When from sin our hearts are pure and free;
And we shall gather, Saviour, with Thee
In our eternal home

2. ‘Suffer the children” Oh, hear His voice!
Let ev’ry heart leap forth and rejoice,
And let us freely make Him our choice
Do not delay, but come

3. Think once again, He’s with us today
Heed now His blest command, and obey,
Hear now His accents tenderly say,
“Will you, my children, come?”

Amen.
