HERITAGE OF GODLY HOME

Read: 2 Timothy 1:1-5

[1]Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus,
[2]To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
[3]I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;
[4]Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy;
[5]When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.

MEMORISE: When I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also (2 Timothy 1:5).

EXPOSITION
Usually, a heritage is a property or practice, set of values (language inclusive) that is passed down from preceding generations through families or institutional memory. No society is superior to another on earth as some falsely claim. Every community of people on earth has a duty to preserve its goodly heritage, more importantly, the heritage of a godly home must be preserved. Godliness is in Christlikeness. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes (Rom. 10:4). A good communication of this heritage is so vital in every home and what a lesson to learn about how Timothy inherited his, from grandma, Lois, and mother, Eunice.

Here, Paul referenced his own and Timothy’s historical and family connections about their sincere faith (vv. 3,5). Although, the book of Acts 16:1 reveals that Timothy’s father was a Greek (a gentile) and his mother a Jewess, Timothy’s mother was devout in her beliefs, raising Timothy to know Torah and Jewish customs. However, it may also be true that Lois and Eunice had become Christians in Lystra during Paul’s ministry there and that had greatly influence on Timothy’s salvation too. We can safely suggest that, Paul and Timothy were therefore family, attested fellow Jews and fellow believers in Christ, wherever they lived.

In any part of the world we may live, it is our duty to preserve our goodly and godly heritage in Christ Jesus, and effectively communicate it to our households (Prov. 22:6; 1 Cor. 11:13-16). Although, Timothy was away in Ephesus from his hometown of Lystra, he kept his goodly and godly heritage that had influenced his walk with God. Never despise or throw away your inherent godly heritage, anytime and anywhere.
