PASSAGE: 1 CORINTHIANS 5: 6 – 8

MEMORY VERSE: 1 Corinthians 5:7 “Therefore purge out old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.”

PRAYER: God Almighty, help to remove immorality from the body of Christ, that we may have eternal life through Jesus Christ. Amen.
At the beginning of this chapter, Paul mentioned the sin of immorality that was ravaging the Corinthian Church and it was not dealt with. He recommended that the adulterer be disciplined for the purpose of repentance and to serve as a deterrent to others.
With such a sin and others, he urged them not to allow them to grow to the stage of becoming cancerous among them. He illustrated his message with the feast of Passover that took place in Egypt. The Jews swept all leavened bread from their houses, because the feast has to be celebrated with unlearned bread (Ex.12:15f).
Leaven has a fermenting action that illustrates corrupting power of evil. It is like yeast which bakers and confectioneries apply to flour for it to rise to make it look big but lacks commensurate weight. Since Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed, the Church ought to have been an unleavened house, otherwise the yeast of sin can spread unchecked.
The world has influenced the Church today in greater dimensions to the extent that some members are not afraid to sin willfully because discipline among its members, has been neglected. Adultery is now rife, even involving men and woman of God. Beware!
To become a new being, mortify the body so that it will not yield to sin that will destroy the body and affect the soul negatively. As soon as sin is detected in the body of a Christian, it should not be ignored because ignoring it opens the door for indiscipline, and denying the purpose of Christ’s death. Do not yield to temptation of sexual immorality; be controlled by the Spirit of Christ; let the Word of God richly dwell in you (Col 4:6).
