TOPIC: DISOBEDIENT TO GOD’S LAW
Read 1 Kings 13:11-24
[11]Now there dwelt an old prophet in Bethel; and his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Bethel: the words which he had spoken unto the king, them they told also to their father.
[12]And their father said unto them, What way went he? For his sons had seen what way the man of God went, which came from Judah.
[13]And he said unto his sons, Saddle me the ass. So they saddled him the ass: and he rode thereon,
[14]And went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak: and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am.
[15]Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread.
[16]And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee: neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place:
[17]For it was said to me by the word of the LORD, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest.
[18]He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him.
[19]So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house, and drank water.
[20]And it came to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word of the LORD came unto the prophet that brought him back:
[21]And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the LORD, and hast not kept the commandment which the LORD thy God commanded thee,
[22]But camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place, of the which the LORD did say to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy carcase shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers.
[23]And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, to wit, for the prophet whom he had brought back.
[24]And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him: and his carcase was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it, the lion also stood by the carcase.
MEMORISE: But it shall come to pass, if you do not obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments and His statues which I command you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you (Deuteronomy 28:15)
EXPOSITION
Disobedience is refusing to obey rules and laws. God gave His laws to regulate the conduct and affairs of His people. They cannot just live as they wish. He directs them for His purpose. The people of God are special, set aside for His glory. They are not like others but uniquely different as the great God that is different from other gods. He cannot be worshipped the way other gods are being worshipped. He is not one of them, or one like them. Therefore, His people should have different laws which must be obeyed.
God’s laws stand and cannot be changed, because of anything. It remains, and must be adequately obeyed, anytime, everywhere. God’s laws remain the same to all men, irrespective of their statuses, locations, tribes, ages, etc. It means same to all.
Mordecai, in the old Persia Empire, ruled by King Xerxes, knew and obeyed the law of the true God – Yahweh, though in strange land as captive. He honoured God to dishonour the highly arrogant prime minister of the empire named Haman. For God says, His glory will He not share with anyone. Mordecai refused to break God’s law/doctrine to honour man. Can this be said about you? Do you honour man with disobedience to God? Make amend.
Disobedience to God’s law is evil, dangerous and deadly. The choice of God among the nations, Israel, suffered a great deal for their disobedience. God warned them never to behave as the Egyptians and also to be careful not to be copy the ways of the people of the land, where He was taking them to. He gave them the laws to guide them, they disobeyed the laws of God and they were never spared from the consequences.
No one has ever experienced consequence free from disobedience to His laws. Therefore, we must be careful about how we handle the laws of God.
PRAYER POINTS
1. Pray that God should forgive you in every area you have disobeyed Him by breaking His laws.
2. Pray that God will give you an obedient heart so as to always do His biddings.
3. Pray for our youths that they will never be carried away by the cares of this world and strive with their Maker.
