THE CONTAINER AND ITS CONTENT (1)
Read: 1 Samuel 16:12-19
1 Samuel 16:12-19 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.
Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.
And Saul’s servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.
Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.
And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.
Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him.
Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, which is with the sheep.
MEMORISE:
Then one of the servants answered and said, “Look, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valour, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; and the Lord is with him (1 Samuel 16:18)
EXPOSITION
Every container is designed to carry something, and from what it does, or contains its true value. You don’t appreciate a dairy Milk can, that after you open it, it has liquid detergent inside, because there is no correlation between the two. Also, no container is useful, if it contains nothing. In the words of Paul, it is only a sounding Cymbal, which makes noise (1 Corinthians 13:1).
When king Saul became mentally derailed, the only therapy his men could seek for him was to get a musician who would play for him whenever the insanity comes on him. And by providence, the only person who can do that job in the whole Israel was David, the son of Jesse. What a divine arrangement! Prior to that, David had been anointed king in his place but yet to be installed. What do you think made him fit for the job? Anointing and God-given skills. David was a container that housed the singing skills, a valiant man, a man of war, prudent in matters, comely person, and possessed the spirit of God. Indeed, he was highly sought for because of what was on his inside.
What do you have right there on the inside? What skills have you been able to gather over the period? Or you were just busy doing nothing? Self-development is very important. What are you anointed, or called to do? How are you doing it? Why do you think you should be the man for the job, or a vessel in God’s hand? David was well equipped both as a vessel and its content, hence securing the job was an easy snatch.
Are you a student? You have to study! Are you a worker? Develop yourself. Whoever you are, there is room to make your container carry value by its content.
PRAYER POINTS
1. Oh Lord please, open my eyes to discover the true picture of my life and if I am not doing the right thing at the moment for my manifestation, help me to brace up.
2. Lord, deliver me from every anti-development spirit that wants to ruin my glorious destiny.
3. Lord, make me restless, until I have begun to add more value to my life.
