TIME OF REMEMBRANCE & RECONCILIATION FOR THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR
WHO WILL PICK THE GAUNTLET (II)
READ 1 SAMUEL 17V37-51
37 KJV:David said moreover, The Lord that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the Lord be with thee.
38 KJV:And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail.
39 KJV:And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.
40 KJV:And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.
41 KJV:And the Philistine came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him.
42 KJV:And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.
43 KJV:And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.
44 KJV:And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.
45 KJV:Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.
46 KJV:This day will the Lord deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
47 KJV:And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hands.
48 KJV:And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came, and drew nigh to meet David, that David hastened, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.
49 KJV:And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.
50 KJV:So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.
51 KJV:Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.
MEMORISE: KJV:Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.
(1 Samuel 17v45).
EXPOSITION
Today is the day 2 of the REMEMBRANCE AND RECONCILIATION FOR THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR. A gauntlet is a glove of armoured leather that protects the hand during a jostle. In the ancient world, a knight threw his gauntlet on the floor as a form of challenge to the other knights. Whosoever picked the gauntlet is adjudged to have accepted the challenge. Nearly everyone in a group to success in the face of glaring oppositions? Sometimes, not the most brilliant, nor the heavy weight. History helps us to know that sometimes tjsoe who later became saviours of their people were once forgotten and despied (cf.Jdg.11v1-6). David was the youngest of his siblings and who would have thought any good thing could come from his Nazareth? Let us see how he was able to pick the gauntlet (the challenge) that liberated entire Israel from the threat of Goliath.
● I can: He believed in himself that if he had killed a bear and a lion before, then this giant wouldn’t be a big threat (cf.Phil 4v13, 1 Jn.4v4). This is no pride it is boldness.
● Faith. This is a great tool to stop the adversary in our lives. With faith in God, you can move great mountains (Matt.17v20).
● Confidence: Our song should always be if God be for us, who can be against us. David trusted more in his own little tools than the heavyweight armour of Saul. Don’t despise that gift of God in your life.
● The God factor: They that know their God shall do exploits (Dan.11v32). How tenaciously are we holding on to God and His Word for victory when trouble comes our ways?
● Courage: The giant had everything to march over David, but the courage in him reduced his enemy to an ant. Don’t listen to the roaring of the devil, listen to the Saviour still small voice. Forge ahead for God is in You.
Prayer points
1. Lord, give me the wherewithal to face the challenge of my life and rise to defend those around me.
2. O Lord, let our youths know and appreciate that their strength is only in You and not in any occult powers.
3. Pray for CAC Babajide Region, our father in the Lord, the Superintendent, and it’s officers at the various levels, as led by the spirit of God.
