REJOICE IN SUFFERING

Bible Text: Romans 5:1-5
Memory Verse: “Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;” Romans 5:3, NIV
Horatio G. Spafford, a successful Lawyer, who composed the Hymn, ‘It is well with my soul’ had a very bitter and hard experience in life. He sent his wife and four daughters on a scheduled journey and promised to join them. Unfortunately, his four daughters got drowned in a shipwreck, only his wife survived. Later Spafford stood for hours on the deck of the ship carrying him to rejoin his wife in Cardiff. When the ship passed the approximate place where his daughters had drowned, he received sustaining comfort from God that enabled him to write this hymn: When sorrows like sea billows roll…it is well with my Soul.
Apostle Paul makes it clear that, the believer is blessed beyond all imagination by God through justification. The results of justification are peace with God; access into the grace of God; hope for the glory of God and glory in suffering (vs.1-5). Paul tells the Romans to rejoice in suffering because suffering produces something of great value. It is not that you rejoice when suffering comes upon you, but you rejoice in God in the midst of your suffering.
Rejoice in the LORD at all times, be glad in the LORD and trust in Him (Philippians 4:4-7). In the midst of tribulation, pain and distress; fix your gaze upon the LORD (Proverbs 4:25).
Insight: God doesn’t promise that you will not go through the fire but He will go through it with you.
Prayer: Let every unrepentant and stubborn pursuers be disgraced in my life, in Jesus’
name. Amen
