TOPIC: GIFTS OF WISDOM AND KNOWLEDGE

MEMORY SCRIPTURE

For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:8).

The LORD gave King Solomon the gift of exceptional wisdom. He still gives today. You can ask for divine wisdom.

BRIEF COMMENT

In this age of increased knowledge and information (Dan. 12:4), it is crucial for the Church to be well prepared. Many misleading and harmful books are being published, often reflecting the authors’ selfish and worldly perspectives. Even the Bible can be misinterpreted, hence the need for the Church to fully utilise the gifts of knowledge and wisdom divinely bestowed upon her to avoid falling into confusion. The gift of wisdom is a supernatural ability that provides insight into God’s truth for the benefit of His people, while the gift of knowledge enables the declaration of God’s revelation and the understanding of how it applies to various aspects of life.

1. The LORD is still in the business of giving believers wisdom and knowledge to facilitate His work among His people.

2. The gift of knowledge brings awareness, while the ability to appropriately channel the knowledge is wisdom. Are you appropriating the knowledge of God?

AIM AND OBJECTIVES

AIM*: To show the gifts of knowledge and wisdom as God-given, and causing the believer to be outstanding.

OBJECTIVES:* At the end of the lesson, learners should be able to:

i. differentiate between the gifts of knowledge and wisdom and discuss their purposes and effects on the believer; and

ii. convincingly state how one can receive these gifts.

INTRODUCTION

TEXTUAL SOURCE: 1 KINGS 3:11-12,23-25; 4:1FF; PROVERBS 18:15; JEREMIAH 11:18; JOHN 4:7FF; ACTS 5:1-11; 1 CORINTHIANS 12:8: JAMES 3:17)

We bless the name of the LORD for last week’s lesson, with the topic: *THE MIRACLE-WORKING* GRACE. We believe that God has opened our eyes to the working of this gift.

This week, we shall be considering the topic, *GIFTS OF WISDOM AND KNOWLEDGE.* These gifts are classified as Power and Revelation gifts. The gift of knowledge reveals what is unknown or hidden in order to bring an understanding of God’s intentions or desires; something that we would have no natural ability to know, i.e. the human knowledge is incapable of fathoming. The gift of wisdom is the ability to have a healthy perception and make sound judgement about a subject, most especially based on the knowledge the Spirit affords. It is the Holy Spirit Who imparts as He wills.

We pray that the LORD will reveal and unleash these gifts unto us as we learn from Him this week, in Jesus’ name.

LESSON EXPOSITION

I. THE GIFT OF KNOWLEDGE (Prov. 18:15; Jer. 11:18; Jn. 4:7ff; Acts 5:1-11; 1 Cor. 12:8b)*

To another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit (1 Cor. 12:8b).

a) The gift of knowledge is also known as the “Word of Knowledge”. The Grk. gnosis meaning ‘knowing’ shows knowledge as to know by experience.

b) 1 Cor. 12:8b: Word of Knowledge is a divinely inspired revelation about a past fact or circumstance. It also says accurately what will take place ace in the future, such that is impossible to know in the natural man’s spirit (cf. Deut. 29:29).

c) Prov. 18:15: It is a gift that makes the heart prudent and ear wise in God’s way. This shows in the way the believer with this gift uses his/her tongue (15:2).

d) Jer. 11:18: Now the LORD gave me knowledge of it, and I know it; for You showed me their doings. This is a clear manifestation of this gift in the life of Prophet Jeremiah. It makes the gifted to know things beyond the ordinary.

e) Jn. 4:7ff: Jesus manifested this gift as He related with the Samaritan woman at the well.

f) Acts 5:1-11: Peter received a word of knowledge concerning the lie of Ananias and Sapphira that saved the Church from embarrassment, just as in Acts 10:1ff, Cornelius was given a word of knowledge about Simon Peter.

g) The gift of knowledge empowers us as Christians against falsehood, misdirection and destruction.

II. THE GIFT OF WISDOM (1 Kgs. 3:11-12,23-25; 4:1ff; 1 Cor. 12:8a; Jas. 3:17)

For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit (1 Cor. 12:8a).

a) 1 Cor. 12:8a: The gift of wisdom or the Word of Wisdom is the Spirit-enabled right use of knowledge that manifests in making right decisions that glorify God and edify others.

b) Jas. 3:17: …the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. This is a very clear picture of the spiritual gift of wisdom.

c) 1 Kgs 3:11-12: Solomon’s laudable initial love for God (vv. 3-4) clearly informed the worship he gave and his God-pleasing request for wisdom (cf. 1 Sam. 3:1,4,19-21; Matt. 6:33; Jas. 1:5).

d) vv. 23-25: This gift also implies the ability to make wise decisions in difficult circumstances. This is shown in how Solomon settled the dispute between the prostitutes, where human philosophy would have failed (cf. Jn. 8:3-11)

e) 4:1-19: Solomon’s government was successful through the gift of wisdom. If wisdom is absent, disorderliness and confusion set in. Government at all levels, take a cue from this (Prov. 24:3).

f) 4:29ff: The gift makes the believer a wonder to the world (10:1,24). It is not learnt; it is given. It is always evident in unmistakable godly service to God and humanity (1 Pet. 4:10).

g) We should earnestly desire and pray for this spirit/grace of wisdom (Eph. 1:17; Jas. 1:5), as Solomon did.

h) When a man possesses and manifests the gift of wisdom, he is set for a journey of indelible impact to his immediate environment and the world at large.

LESSONS DERIVED

1. The gifts of wisdom and knowledge are divinely given. When asked in faith, He is always willing and ready to release them.

2. The presence of the gift of knowledge and wisdom in our lives should draw men to the Giver of the gifts-God-through Christ, in His Spirit.

QUESTIONS

1. Solomon got more than he asked for. What is the implication of this in contrast to prayers in churches and on mountains, today?

2. Is the Gift of Knowledge speculative or divine?
