LESSON THREE.
JESUS’ FRIENDS GAVE HIM A TREAT.
TEXT: JOHN 12:1-8
February 16TH & 23rd, 2020.
MEMORY VERSE: Mary took a pound of costly ointment of pure and nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment. John 12:3 (RSV)
OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a. always appreciate God for His doings in their lives;
b. know that nothing is too much to be given to God;
c. know that we should not listen to people’s comments when we do as we are led; and
d. know Mary added beauty to the celebration.
INTRODUCTION
Review previous lesson. Since the lesson, have you shown love to someone you have refused to love before now? There is need to show love to him/her. It is compulsory and necessary to do so. We shall not be guilty before God. Amen. Jesus had earlier on showed love to Lazarus and his family.
When Lazarus was sick, Jesus was sent for but, he delayed to go to them. When he eventually did what no man can do. He did that which only God can do. He brought back to life a man who had died four days. When Jesus later visited them, they (the friends) celebrated Him. Jesus was given a treat. Listen well to become part of the Celebration.
FIRST WEEK: JESUS VISIT BETHANY
February 16th, 2020.
We all know that when our friends have success, they are celebrated in one way or the other. There are always surprises. It gives joy and renews friendship. No wonder, after Lazarus was brought back to life that the sisters celebrated him, and Jesus was there. Six days of the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany in the house of Mary and Martha where Lazarus had been before his death. Other people were there too. Bethany to Jerusalem was about 3km i.e about two miles. There they made Him supper. Martha served and Lazarus was one of those at table with Him. He was lavishly entertained.
As they were enjoying themselves, something very unique took place. Mary could not keep her joy — she went in and brought a container said to be filled with nard perfume. It was very expensive; Judas estimated the price to be about one year’s salary of the daily paid. He was so astonished that he never knew when he spoke out. ‘Why is this woman being wasteful as he saw how she poured the perfume on Jesus’ feet and used her hair to clean it off. It would have been sold and the money given to the poor.
Jesus knew that he was not carrying about the poor but has an interior motive to steal the money from the money-box. He was cautioned not to stop the woman as she had done nobly. The gift of this woman was significant of Jesus’ burial, and everyone will hear about it when it is fulfilled. In fact, Mary’s contribution to the treat Jesus was given added colour to the event. The Fragrance became noticed as the environment had change. Everyone there knew that an expensive perfume had been used. She poured the perfume on the legs of Jesus and wiped it with her hair. All because she appreciated Jesus for who He is and for what He has done to her and the brother. Never stop doing good. Do not relent in showing love to the Lord. Appreciate all His actions in every way possible. Do not be weary in well-doing.
LESSONS
1. Always appreciate God for His doings in your life.
2. Nothing is too much to be given to God.
3. Do not allow the comments of people to discourage you from appropriating God or giving to Him.
4. Mary added beauty to the celebration.
5. There is always a purpose for all we do.
