EXCELLENCE: NOT AN EVENT

TEXT: PROVERBS 31:19-31

MEMORY VERSE: “Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all” (PROVERBS 31:29).

According to Aristotle, the Greek Philosopher, “Excellence is an art won by training and habituation… We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit”. In 2014, a 24 year old Nigerian, Olaoluwa Oluwadara, became the youngest African with a doctorate degree in Mathematics. Revealing the secret of his excellence, he said: “I spend time studying and researching both at home and in the school. I also have time to pray in the morning, and attend church services”.

Advising other youths, he said: “Never give up. Be focused, diligent, disciplined and have God at the center of all your endeavours”. What a challenge to youths aspiring for excellence!

In our text, the virtuous woman excelled others because of her repeated and persistent act of love. Hard work and frugality are pivot to spiritual and academic excellence. Do not settle for mediocrity or an average performance. Determine to excel through diligence, hard work, prayer, absolute faith in God, and you will excel in all areas of your life. Excellence is not an event, but a habit. In other words, practice makes perfect.

QUOTE: Determine to excel through diligence.

CHALLENGE: Determine to excel through diligence and hard work.

PRAYER: Help me Lord to excel in all areas of my life.
