THE WEAPONS OF OUR ENEMY (II)

Read: Genesis 38:13-24

Genesis 38:13-24  And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold thy father in law goeth up to Timnath to shear his sheep.

And she put her widow’s garments off from her, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife.

When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot; because she had covered her face.

And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter in law.) And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?

And he said, I will send thee a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it?

And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.

And she arose, and went away, and laid by her vail from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.

And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman’s hand: but he found her not.

Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the harlot, that was openly by the way side? And they said, There was no harlot in this place.

And he returned to Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, that there was no harlot in this place.

And Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.

And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.

MEMORISE:

Stolen water is sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant. But he does not know that the dead are there, that her guest are in the depths of hell (Proverbs 9:17, 18)

EXPOSITION

Another weapon that the enemy of our souls employs against us is sex. Sexual immorality is rife everywhere. What is sex? It is a physical act or exercise, ordained by God, to take place between two legally married couples. It is the cement that glues other blocks of marriage together. The Bible approves of sex and uses several synonyms to code it: “knowing,” “joining together,” “coming-in-unto,” “drinking water from the pot,” etc. However, this God-ordained and holy state has been manipulated and adopted by the devil as a weapon of mass destruction to fall unsuspecting mighty men and women.

Judah was designed by God to be king among his brethren. The Bible says that the sceptre of the king would never depart from him. His name Judah means ‘praise’ (1 Chro. 5:2). However, because, he was a widower and couldn’t hold himself, decided to pay for sex with a harlot. The harlot was later on discovered to be his own daughter-in-law, Tamar, who had wanted him to give his last son to her as husband. Judah’s uncontrollable desire for sex had led him into the trap set by the woman. It is folly on his part to have fallen into the enemy’s trap set for him because that singular act nearly robbed him of so many things, such as signet ring, sceptre or staff of office, which are symbols of his authority and office, but for God’s intervention.

Many people out there are already robbed of their glorious destinies, visions and beautiful dreams because they laid with wrong persons. Samson lost his life, power, and God’s purpose because, he failed to control his sexual urge. Dinah’s life was destroyed by that singular illicit sexual act, likewise Tamar. As good and pleasurable as sex is, the misuse of it is always adjudged lustful and sinful. It has always caused the victims great losses and retributions. Remember the sin of Reuben with his father’s wife, and David with Bathsheba. The trend now is that the devil encourage and promote sexual immortality through many means – the media, billboards, nude pictures, pornography, songs, etc., and worse still, the churches. Indecent dressing must be discouraged to curb the menace of rape and sexual harassment.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Thank you, Lord Jesus, because all power belongs to You and You have rendered impotent all the weapons of the enemy of our souls.

2. I render powerless every inordinate affection working in me, in the name of Jesus.

3. Intercede for Christian leaders who have fallen victim of sexual immortality and traps, that the Lord should deliver and restore them.
