TOPIC: BE CALM AND SILENT (II)

MEMORISE : For thus says the LORD God, the Holy One of Israel : “In returning and rest you shall be saved; In quietness and confidence shall be your strength” But you would not (Isaiah 30:15).

READ : Isaiah 30:15-16

[15]. For thus says the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel: “In returning and rest you shall be saved; In quietness and confidence shall be your strength.” But you would not,

[16]. And you said, “No, for we will flee on horses”— Therefore you shall flee! And, “We will ride on swift horses”— Therefore those who pursue you shall be swift!

EXPOSITION

In yesterday’s message, Elijah needed a word from God to know what to do next. God did not appear in the storm, wind, earthquake, or fire as he waited for Him to speak, but when the atmosphere became calm. He spoke in a still small voice. There is a great deal of wisdom in being calm and quiet (Eccl. 9-17). The Word of God clarifies, In quietness and confidence shall be your strength (Isa. 30:15). What does this mean? You can be saved by returning to me. You can have rest. You can be strong by being quiet and by trusting me (GWT). I will keep you safe if you turn back to me and calm down. I will make you strong if you quietly trust me (CEV). In returning [to Me] and resting [in Me) you shall be saved; in quietness and in [trusting] confidence shall be your strength (AMP). Only in returning to me and waiting for me will you be saved; in quietness and confidence is your strength (TLB).

God enjoys talking to us, His children, in a calm and organised atmosphere. He caught Moses’ attention in the quiet wilderness to commission him (Exod. 2: 1, 2). To improve upon your meditation on the Word and things of God, you need more calmness and quietness (Lam. 3:26). They are attributes of greatness and effective living. How calm and quiet are you before the Lord? Remember: Those who learn to calmly wait for and on the Lord live to reap the enviable rewards of their calm and quiet waiting (Isa. 40:31)

SUGGESTED HYMN FOR TODAY
CAC GHB: 455

1. When quiet in my house I sit,
Thy Book be my companion still,
My joy Thy sayings to repeat,
Talk o’er the records of Thy will,
And search the oracles divine,
Till every heartfelt word be mine.

2. O may the gracious word divine
Subject of all my converse be!
So will the Lord His follow’r join,
And walk And talk Himself with me
So shall my heart His presence prove
And burn with everlasting love.

3. Oft as I lay me down to rest,
O may the reconciling word
Sweetly compose my weary breast!
While, on the bosom of my Lord,
I sink in blissful dreams away,
And visions of eternal day.

4. Rising to sing my Saviour’s praise,
Thee may I publish all day long;
And let Thy precious word of grace
Flow from my heart and fill my tongue;
Fill all my life with purest love,
And join me to the Church above.

Amen.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Holy Spirit, since in quietness lies my strength, help me to bridle my tongue.

2. Holy Spirit, help me to choose my words wisely in all situations so that I don’t end up offending You and complicating the situations.

3. Lord, help our churches to be more concerned with the attitude of gentleness, calmness and quietness in the presence of the Lord to always get the best from and of Him.
