TOPIC: WHEN WEAPONS OF WAR ARE NOT ENOUGH…

MEMORISE

No king is saved by the multitude of an army; a mighty man is not delivered by great strength (Psalm 33:16).

READ : Amos 2:11-16

[11]. I raised up some of your sons as prophets, And some of your young men as Nazirites. Is it not so, O you children of Israel?” Says the Lord.

[12]. “But you gave the Nazirites wine to drink,
And commanded the prophets saying, ‘Do not prophesy!’

[13]. “Behold, I am weighed down by you,
As a cart full of sheaves is weighed down.

[14]. Therefore flight shall perish from the swift, The strong shall not strengthen his power, Nor shall the mighty deliver himself;

[15]. He shall not stand who handles the bow,
The swift of foot shall not escape, Nor shall he who rides a horse deliver himself.

[16]. The most courageous men of might Shall flee naked in that day,” Says the Lord.

EXPOSITION

Show me a man who conquers, and I will show you a man whose backup is God. Have you ever wondered why sickness claims the lives of wealthy people who have access to the best doctors and funds to cover their medical bills? How is it that Goliath, equipped with all his formidable armour, met defeat at the hands of young David armed with merely a sling and 5 stones? Clearly, the size of an army doesn’t guarantee a king’s victory. God, the Creator, is able to utilise them according to His will. No matter who wields the weaponry and regardless of its sophistication, it is God who determines its effectiveness. Beware of provoking Him, for He can turn the tables, causing the mighty to be outwitted by the weak. Goliath, despite his impressive physique and armour, met his downfall when he challenged the living and powerful God of Israel (1 Sam. 17:4-7).

God, Who previously defeated the Amorites for the sake of Israel, also brought about their downfall when they rebelled against Him. Of course, sin brings disgrace upon a nation (Prov. 14:34). While sin leaves you defenceless, righteousness beckons God to the forefront of your battles, securing your victory. Therefore, on this National Love Your Pet Day and World Day of Social Justice, you are enjoined to place no trust in humanity or human endeavours, as you may find yourself disappointed, if you persist in transgressing against the Almighty God. Like the psalmist, you too can confidently declare, I will lift up my eyes to the hills from whence comes my help? My help comes from the LORD, Who made heaven and earth (Psalm 121:1-2).

SUGGESTED HYMN FOR TODAY:
CAC GHB: 809

1. When we walk with the lord
In the light of his word
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will,
He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey

Chorus:
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus,
But to trust and obey

2. Not a shadow can rise,
Not a cloud in the skies,
But His smile quickly drives it away;
Not a doubt nor a fear
Not a sigh nor a tear,
Can abide while we trust and obey.

3. Not a burden we bear,
Not a sorrow we share
But our toil he doth richly repay;
Not a grief nor a loss,
Not a frown nor a cross,
But is blest if we trust and obey.

4. But we never can prove
The delights of His love
Until all on the alter we lay;
For the favour He shows,
And the joy he bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.

5. Then in fellowship sweet
We will sit at His feet,
Or we’ll walk by His side in the way;
What He says we will do
Where He sends we will go
Never fear, only trust and obey.

Amen.
