TOPIC: MARRY WITHIN THE FOLD (1)
MEMORISE : And I will make you swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell: but you shall go to my country and to my family, and take a wife for my son Isaac (Genesis 24:3-4).
READ: Genesis 24:1-7
[1]. Now Abraham was old, well advanced in age; and the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things.
[2]. So Abraham said to the oldest servant of his house, who ruled over all that he had, “Please, put your hand under my thigh,
[3]. and I will make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell;
[4]. but you shall go to my country and to my family, and take a wife for my son Isaac.”
[5]. And the servant said to him, “Perhaps the woman will not be willing to follow me to this land. Must I take your son back to the land from which you came?”
[6]. But Abraham said to him, “Beware that you do not take my son back there.
[7]. The Lord God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my family, and who spoke to me and swore to me, saying, ‘To your descendants I give this land,’ He will send His angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there.
EXPOSITION
Many parents are much more concerned with their prospective in-laws’ states of origin than with their qualities and levels of maturity. Yet, the Bible has provided us with instructions to follow when making marriage decisions. Firstly, when God was going to give the helpmeet to Adam, He took the rib from man while animals and other creatures were from the ground (Gen. 2:19,21-22). Only God knows the best place and time to get your spouse. Don’t run ahead of Him (cf. Jer. 10:23; 29:11).
Secondly, Abraham gave Eliezer specific instructions on where to get a wife for his son, Isaac (Gen. 24:3-4). The place of godly parents in cooperation with the Owner and Giver of all (Psa. 24:1ff) can never be overemphasised. If you play your godly parents in the choice of your life partner, may you not live to regret your godless decision (Prov. 14:12). Amen. It is becoming more riskier for the young man/woman to go alone in search of his/her spouse. Only God knows where and how to get the man’s/woman as marriage partner.
PRAYER POINTS
1. Lord, deliver me from unnecessary self-will, pride and complacency in all my dealings in life, marriage inclusive.
2. Lord Jesus, let the disaster that befell Esau maritally never be the lot of my children.
3. Pray for the CAC Department of Christian Education, the Director and the staff as led by the Spirit of God.
