TOPIC: BE A FAITHFUL AND WISE STEWARD

MEMORISE : And the Lord said, “Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his master will make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of food in due season?” (Luke 12:42)

READ: Luke 12: 42-48

[42]. And the Lord said, “Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his master will make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of food in due season?

[43]. Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes.

[44]. Truly, I say to you that he will make him ruler over all that he has.

[45]. But if that servant says in his heart, ‘My master is delaying his coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and be drunk,

[46]. the master of that servant will come on a day when he is not looking for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.

[47]. And that servant who knew his master’s will, and did not prepare himself or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.

[48]. But he who did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.

EXPOSITION

Stewardship is one of the major Bible doctrines that primarily has to do with the way we live our lives for God and others. ‘Stewardship’ literally means management of an establishment, or the act of performing delegated rule over another person’s institution, or affairs by the owner’s consent, or directives. In biblical terms, stewardship means managing and utilising all God has entrusted us with for His own glory and the benefit of others. From its Greek origin, it means the manager of the affairs of another person (1 Cor. 4; 1- 2; 1 Pet. 4:10). Your stewardship as a Christian includes the use of your own very lifetime, money, talent, gift and other resources. You are expected to be a faithful steward in the first place (1 Cor. 4:2). The fundamental principle of biblical stewardship is that God owns everything and we are simply managers/administrators on His behalf (Deut. 8:17-18; 10:14; Psa. 24:1; Jn. 3:27).

As a steward, you will soon be called to give account of how you managed all that God committed to you (Eccl. 12:14; Heb. 9:27). Be a wise steward, because the Master will appear when no one expects (Matt. 24:43; Lk. 16:1-9; 1 Thess. 5:2,4). Always be ready for His return – using your present opportunities for your future welfare. Be on the alert.

1. Father, I promise to be a faithful and wise steward of Yours. Give me the grace, in Jesus’ name.

2. Father, help me to be faithful to You as I render my services.

3. Set me free, Oh Lord, from all my unfaithful living.

SUGGESTED HYMN FOR TODAY
CAC GHB: 738

1. To the work, to the work! we are servants of God;
Let us follow the path that our
Master has trod;
With the balm of His counsel our strength to renew;
Let us do with our might what our hands find to do;

Chorus:
Toiling on, toiling on,
Toiling on, toiling on,
Let us hope, let us watch,
And labour till the Master comes.

2. To the work, to the work! let the hungry be fed,
To the fountain of life let the weary be led;
In the cross and its banner our glory shall be;
While we herald the tidings, salvation is free;

3. To the work, to the work! there is labour for all,
For the kingdom of darkness and error shall fall;
And the name of Jehovah exalted shall be
In the loud-swelling chorus,
Salvation is free.

4. To the work, to the work in the strength of the Lord,
And a robe and a crown shall our labour reward;
When the home of the faithful our dwelling shall be,
And we shout with the ransomed,
“Salvation is free.”

Amen.
