TOPIC: NEVER MESS WITH THE LORD!

MEMORISE

And Pharaoh said, “Who is the LORD, that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, nor will let Israel go” (Exodus 5:2).

READ : Exodus 5:1-9

[1]. Afterward Moses and Aaron went in and told Pharaoh, “Thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘Let My people go, that they may hold a feast to Me in the wilderness.’”

[2]. And Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord, that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the Lord, nor will I let Israel go.”

[3]. So they said, “The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Please, let us go three days’ journey into the desert and sacrifice to the Lord our God, lest He fall upon us with pestilence or with the sword.”

[4]. Then the king of Egypt said to them, “Moses and Aaron, why do you take the people from their work? Get back to your labor.” 5 And Pharaoh said, “Look, the people of the land are many now, and you make them rest from their labor!”

[6]. So the same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters of the people and their officers, saying,

[7]. “You shall no longer give the people straw to make brick as before. Let them go and gather straw for themselves.

[8]. And you shall lay on them the quota of bricks which they made before. You shall not reduce it. For they are idle; therefore they cry out, saying, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’

[9]. Let more work be laid on the men, that they may labor in it, and let them not regard false words.”

EXPOSITION

Pharaoh believed he could play with the Almighty YAHWEH’S kindness and slowness to anger. He was attempting to buy time by stylishly negotiating Israel’s independence. God’s forbearance is not a sign of weakness, or slackness, but that the recalcitrants should trace their steps back to Him. After witnessing uneasy moments of the Nile turning into blood, manifestations of frogs, gnats on man and livestock with great swarm of flies, the king decided to release God’s people conditionally (v. 28). As much as the people would agree to stay and dwell at a nearby area where they would be reached at Pharaoh’s beck and call, he would not mind granting their release. What a proposed pretentious liberty!

Thank God for Moses’ emphatic resolution, he rejected the stupid deal; otherwise the story would have been different, today! Pharaoh despised his conscience, he thought he could play God. Of course, he knew almost next to nothing about this awesome God. Otherwise, he shouldn’t have made the statement in Exodus 5:2. What a fool (cf. Psa. 14:1)! He was messing with the King of the universe, the Owner of his own soul. God troubled him with 9 terrible plagues until the last straw that broke the back of his camel’s back, and he eventually lost his life in the marine. Have you been joking with accepting and following Christ, or forsaking that sin, and living holy? Don’t become another wasted Pharaoh, even as we observe National Maritime Day and International Day of Conscience, today.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Oh Lord, I repent of every stubbornness against Your loving warnings and persuasion.

2. You spirit of stubbornness that makes a man to be contending against his Creator, out of my life, in Jesus’ name.

3. Almighty God, disgrace every power contending with the Gospel globally.
