TOPIC: THE CONSEQUENCE
MEMORISE : The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion (Proverbs 28:1).
READ: Genesis 4:1-12
[1]. Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, “I have acquired a man from the Lord.”
[2]. Then she bore again, this time his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
[3]. And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord.
[4]. Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering,
[5]. but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.
[6]. So the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen?
[7]. If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.”
[8]. Now Cain talked with Abel his brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.
[9]. Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”
[10]. And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground.
[11]. So now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
[12]. When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength to you. A fugitive and a vagabond you shall be on the earth.”
EXPOSITION
Many today are haunted by their past. They have no rest of mind, and are driven around by guilt. No one can prevent justice to take its course. Be careful of what you do, for you will definitely reap what you sow. Cain was seriously haunted by the consequence of his deed-the slaughter of his brother. Abel, in cold blood, that made him the first murderer and fugitive. There is a reward, or consequence for every action, or inaction. The blood of the slain was the first to indict Cain, crying up to God from the earth. “Conscience!” was the next tormentor-in-chief that troubled Cain. He became restless with the feeling of blood guilt (cf. Isa. 48:22) Then came the divine curse upon him.
Sin is a serious taskmaster. Avoid it. To cap it all was the “self-curse” he inflicted on himself, of being hidden from the face of the LORD and of ever being a target of annihilation. What a reward for killing the innocent! Read Genesis 9:5, 6 and Exodus 20:13 to see God’s injunction on murder. Run from the vengeance associated with shedding the blood of the innocent. Instead, take cover in the blood of Jesus, the only blood that doesn’t seek vengeance. Don’t be a blood-shedder for any reason. May God help you (cf. Joel 3:19). Amen.
PRAYER POINTS
1. Lord, I humble myself before You this day. Deliver me from every blood guilt, in the name of Jesus.
2. Lord Jesus, I pray that You deliver me from every generational blood guilt that is daily crying for vengeance.
3. Pray that God should have mercy on prisoners convicted of murder but have repented of such criminality.
