TOPIC: OUR COMMISSION

MEMORISE : I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ, for the sake of His body, which is the church, of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God which was given to me for you, to fulfill the word of God, (Colossians 1:24-25).

READ : Luke 15:11-24

[11]. Then He said: “A certain man had two sons.

[12]. And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me.’ So he divided to them his livelihood.

[13]. And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together, journeyed to a far country, and there wasted his possessions with prodigal living.

[14]. But when he had spent all, there arose a severe famine in that land, and he began to be in want.

[15]. Then he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.

[16]. And he would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods that the swine ate, and no one gave him anything.

[17]. “But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!

[18]. I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you,

[19]. and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.”’

[20]. “And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him.

[21]. And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

[22]. “But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet.

[23]. And bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry;

[24]. for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ And they began to be merry.

EXPOSITION

It is our commission to spread Christ’s Gospel; a mandate that requires us to work tirelessly to make the message known to all nations. As believers, we have the responsibilities to share the hope of glory that is found in Christ with those around us. Paul was one who took this responsibility seriously (1 Cor. 9:16). He dedicated his life to spreading the Gospel. In Colossians 1:24ff, he writes about his mission to proclaim Christ’s mystery to the Gentiles. He explains that Christ is in us and that we must share this message with others so that they too may know the hope of glory.

For us to fulfil this commission, we must work with all the energy that Christ provides. We must teach and admonish everyone with all wisdom, so that they may be presented mature in Christ. We must be intentional about it. We need to be willing to engage with people and be open about our faith. But we must do so with love and compassion, being sensitive to the needs of others. We need to be patient and persistent in our efforts, recognising that it may take time for the message to take root in people’s hearts. The commission to spread the message of Christ is a calling that all Christians share. As believers, we have the responsibilities to share the hope of glory in Christ with those around us. Do your part in fulfilling this Great Commission; spread Christ’s love to all around you.

SUGGESTED HYMN FOR TODAY:
CAC GHB: 429

1. Tell it out among the heathen that the Lord is king;
Tell it out Tell it out:
Tell it out among the nations, let them shout and sing;
Tell it out, tell it out:
Tell it out with adoration that He shall increase,
That the mighty King of Glory is the King of peace;
Tell it out with jubilation, though the waves may roar,
That He sitteth on the waterfloods, our King for evermore.

2. Tell it out among the heathen that the Saviour reigns;
Tell it out Tell it out:
Tell it out among the nations, bid them burst their chains;
Tell it out Tell it out:
Tell it out among the weeping ones that Jesus lives;
Tell it out among the weary ones what rest He gives;
Tell it out among the sinful that
He came to save;
Tell it out among the dying that
He triumphed o’er the grave.

3. Tell it out among the heathen
Jesus reigns above;
Tell it out Tell it out:
Tell it out among the nations that
His reigns is love;
Tell it out Tell it out:
Tell it out among the highways and the lanes at home;
Let it ring across the mountains and the ocean foam!
Like the sound of many waters, let our glad shout be,
Till it echo and re-echo from the
islands of the sea!

Amen.
