TOPIC: BECOMING MORE LIKE CHRIST JESUS (II)

MEMORISE : Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls (Matthew 11:29).

READ : Philippians 2:5-11

[5]. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus,

[6]. who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God,

[7]. but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.

[8]. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.

[9]. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name,

[10]. that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth,

[11]. and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

EXPOSITION

Today, we shall discuss two important qualities of our Lord Jesus as mentioned in our memory verse-gentleness and humility. When Jesus was inviting people to come and enrol in His own lifelong school of discipleship, He revealed who He was to all. In the first place, Jesus declares Himself as gentle. Another word for ‘gentle’ is meek. Gentleness involves courtesy and consideration in one’s dealing with others. Gentleness doesn’t mean weakness or passivity. Rather, it involves humility and thankfulness toward God and polite, restrained behaviour toward others. Gentleness means strength or power under control. Jesus is the perfect role Model for us, especially with how He handled people while He was here on earth. He displayed gentleness with the woman caught in adultery and tenderly cared for the defenceless (Jn. 8:7). Are you gentle as a Christian? Are you a gentle spouse at home?

The Lord also declares Himself as humble in heart, setting Himself as the example to follow. Biblical humility has to do with thinking of others first, and putting their needs first. It is to prefer others to oneself. Jesus is the perfect Example of humility. He was born in a manger and died a humiliating death on the cross of Calvary. He displayed how to imbibe a servant-leader attribute (Jn. 13:1-17). Will you not ask for the help of the Holy Spirit to make you a humble disciple?

PRAYER POINTS

1. Lord, teach me how, and help me to put my power and strength under control.

2. Lord Jesus, let Your Spirit of humility govern my heart everyday.

3. Pray for more of the spirit of gentleness and humility without hypocrisy among our spiritual leaders.
