DON’T UNDERRATE ANYONE
Read: Mark 6:1-6
Mark 6:1-6 Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples.
When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. “Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing?
Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.
Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.”
He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them.
He was amazed at their lack of faith. Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village.
MEMORISE:
Jesus’ brothers said to him, “Leave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples there may see the works you do. No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.” (John 7:3-4).
EXPOSITION
To underrate someone is to underestimate the extent, value or importance of that person. It is to perceive someone as having a lower value, quality or worth than what he/she actually has. People underrate others because of their ego and because they think they have clear knowledge of a person’s background, origin or past life.
Our Lord Jesus Christ was not exempted from people’s erroneous belief about Him. He was faced with challenge of rejection when He visited His own country—Nazareth. He preached in the synagogue on the Sabbath day and when they heard His teachings, they couldn’t come to terms on how He could speak with great wisdom and also did mighty works, so they ridiculed Him with words like He is the son of Mary, his brethren and sister are here with us—it couldn’t have been Him talking with so much wisdom and doing great and mighty works. They refused to admit His Lordship and Messaiahship. Though, they were astonished at Jesus doctrine, they were offended in His person.
Christians who underrate might lose God’s blessings upon their lives. Whenever we underrate anyone, it is to our detriment.
The countrymen of Jesus could not enjoy much of His blessings and miracles because of their unbelief (vv5-6). The miracles of God that should be fully enjoyed by them because they were Jesus countrymen were transferred to others who undoubtedly recognised, believed, accepted and welcome Him (vv53-56). They exploited the opportunity and were greatly blessed.
Do not rub yourself of your God-sent blessings by looking down on others. You never know who God might use for you. It may be your spouse, children, in-law, neighbour, or even a poor beggar. Be wise.
PRAYER POINTS
1. Lord, help me not to miss any opportunity at my door step henceforth.
2. Pray that God should send destiny helpers to your way and grant you the discerning heart to recognise them.
3. Pray that the leaders of God’s people that God will grant them the humility to disseminate their ministry evenly, and not to minister to only those they can benefit from.
